If you’re a fan of 50s cartoons and illustration then you’ll definitely enjoy the work of London-based illustrator and animator Ben Mounsey (aka Green Glasses). With his rockin’ retro-tinged style it’s no surprise that he’s got Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon’s feathers in his cap! We particularly like his wide-eyed characters!

In true creative form, Ben created a set of trading-card-style business cards featuring a range of his characters. Surely the bus stop card is a chase one!

inspiration: Pixarpedia competition

pixarpedia-1

For all you Pixar fans out there, there’s a real treat for you coming up! Publisher DK is releasing a new book called Pixarpedia which, as the name suggests, is an encyclopedia of everything Pixar! They kindly sent us an advance copy and we can vouch for just how good the book is. Full of brilliant artwork and in-depth detail about all the key characters from all the films, there’s also behind-the-scenes interviews with key staff covering areas such as graphic design and sound engineering. And to celebrate the release of the book, DK have teamed up with Pixar and Total Film to launch an animation competition, with the amazing prize of an exclusive trip for two to Pixar Animation Studios in San Francisco!! Here’s what’s involved:

Create an original animation on the theme of ‘An Animated Adventure’

Short-listed animations will be judged by a team of Pixar artists, so that’s a pretty darn good opportunity for exposure in itself! You’ve got until the end of November to enter, and there’s more details over on the official Pixarpedia page.

inspiration: One Click Dog’s | Little Wheel

I was captivated by a wonderful little flash game | animation today ‘Little Wheel’ made by One Click Dog. It took an age to load, (please be patient) but I wasn’t disappointed as the opening sequence kicked in and I was greeted by this interesting, eerie mechanical world. The illustration (reminicient of Rolitoland but more 3D) and how the elements are animated are quite detailed and full of charm. The small puzzles and tasks are nicely balanced, not too hard, but should still give you some trouble. The only negative point I can think of is how short it was, so hopefully they’ll create more soon.

inspiration: Beatles Rockband

Beatles Rock Band

Here at Thunder Chunky, we’re very keen of Guitar Hero, but here’s an incredible promo vid for the upcoming Beatles Rockband! Looks very sharp and like they’ve put a lot of detail in there, which hopefully will be the same for the actual gameplay itself. I’m sure there will be many a fan very keen to get their hands on the game when it’s released on September 9th this year.

Watch the promo vid here. It was put together by the very talented folks at Passion Pictures and directed by Pete Candeland, who also worked on the BBC ‘Journey to the East’ animation for the Beijing Olympics, which we featured in our Designed by China article.

inspiration: WOOD by McBess

Are you ready for some musical madness? The beautiful illustrations in this ‘Dead Pirates music’ video are by McBess, and they hark back to early Disney with it’s black and white nostalgic feel, yet incorporating elements you might find in the work of Pete Fowler / Jamie Hewlett.

You should definately check out McBess’s Blog too!

Update: The “Ellesse 50th anniversary competition” to showcase creative talent, has been extended till May 10th. Those who thought they didn’t have enough time has a second chance to give it a shot. There’s also more promotional artwork, silk screen prints by Kate Gibb influenced by vintage images of tennis players (viewable at the Ellesse 50th site), and a animation (above) by Greek motion designer Babis Alexiadis, featuring hand-stitched characters which took over one hundred hours to create.

inspiration: Honkbarn

Honkbarn

Coming up with characters and illustrations which appeal to very young children can be quite a challenge, but Todd Ramsay has managed it perfectly with his quirkly Honkbarn creations. Filled with creatures called Honkers, whose bodies often resemble musical instruments, Todd has created a world based around simple sounds with funky moves to go with them. You’ve got to love the scratchy, textured illustrations as well!
