inspiration: Mixed-up-media from Chris Brett

chris-brett-1

Today I’ve been enjoying the slightly warped illustrations of the talented Toronto-based illustrator Chris Brett, like his Spy Guy print above! The characters are surreal enough by themselves but when added to Chris’ mixed-media style they take on a freak-show-esque quality… in a good way!! You can see a whole stack of his work and buy some of them as prints over on his Society6 page. Well worth a look!

inspiration: What shall I wear today?

fifi-main

I would say Fifi Lapin is the ultimate Diva in the world of character illustration. She is a sweet bunny with big silk ears, and doesn’t only have a strong interest in carrots, carrot cakes and carrot juices like ordinary bunnies do; she is also dressed in the most glamorous and elegant outfits, following the latest trends of fashion and updating her wardrobe every few days. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Galiano, Topshop are just some of the distinguished brands and designers Fifi can be seen sporting!

inspiration: Wundercould

Thunder Chunky proudly presents, all the way from the mystical land of Greece, shrouded in a cute but slightly sinister charm, the newest member to our Chunks of Thunder team, Wundercloud aka little Antri Katsiki.

With the stress and pressures of real work, running an up to date design blog like Thunder Chunky is no easy task. So with this in mind, we’ve always been on the look out for talented, and creative contributors which will compliment our existing group.

We feel that Antri will give TC a fresh new lift, giving us a more diverse selection of news from a completely different view point, in respects to her tastes and her female touch, which is lacking in the current group of TC males.

Its hard to even scrap the surface of her creativeness with my words. From graphic, to web, to toys and animation, you can get a feel for her charms and creative insights on the new Wundercloud website / Wundercloud blog, and you can follow her Wundercloud twitter. Hope this will whet your appetites, look forward to the new era of Thunder Chunky.

“..Andriana Katsiki is a Greek New Media Artist and Designer living in Liverpool. She loves daydreaming, creating imaginary worlds and meeting strange beings in the ocean of her mind. She believes there is beauty in everything and everyone, using her work as a path to reveal it to the world…”

inspiration: Ben’s Banjo Bliss

If you’re a fan of 50s cartoons and illustration then you’ll definitely enjoy the work of London-based illustrator and animator Ben Mounsey (aka Green Glasses). With his rockin’ retro-tinged style it’s no surprise that he’s got Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon’s feathers in his cap! We particularly like his wide-eyed characters!

In true creative form, Ben created a set of trading-card-style business cards featuring a range of his characters. Surely the bus stop card is a chase one!

interview with MEOMI

meomi-lead-pic

We here at TC have been big fans of Meomi’s cute critters for a fair few years now, so we were chuffed to hear that they’d landed the contract to do the mascots for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. And with only a year to go till the fuzzy fellas (including a Sasquatch!) launch the event, we thought it’d be great to sneak a chat with Vicki Wong – one half of the design super-duo!

inspiration: MUGO = (MUsic on the.GO)

We here at Thunder Chunky are big fans of Vinyl toys, even with our limited incomes and disapproving girlfriends. We have been waiting patiently for an MP3 X Vinyl toy crossover ever since learning about the increasingly popular rise of the mimobots. And now that day has come, the emergence of MUGO (cue* holy light, and epic wave crashing soundbite). These lovely new musical creatures are so amazing, I feel their potential will be no less than that of the mimobots. They’re MP3 Players, they’re Flash Drives, they’re Vinyl Toys, they’re being shipped towards the Thunder Chunky HQ as we speak.

Creatives’ involved include fellow Blood Sweat Vector artists, YUP and Tougui, recently featured paper guru Shin Tanaka, plus awesome illustrators Pulco Mayo and Julie West.

“…Mugo are a shy race of creatures. They are highly individualized ‚Äì sometimes timid and resourceful, sometimes mischievous, but always on the cutting edge. Mugo are born with a natural gift for music, art and culture. They store knowledge. They inspire. You may not know it, but Mugo have been here all along, living in the background of your pictures, riding the wavelengths of your favorite songs. Until recently they felt too awkward to allow themselves to be seen, but they have grown more comfortable with themselves, and so they are coming out of the shadows and into your heart…”

inspiration: The Gross Uncle

grant_gilliland

Today I stumbled upon a real treat. Well, more accurately, a treat stumbled its’ way to me. I received an email from an illustrator & cartoonist called Grant Gilliland. He said some nice words about our site, but more importantly, when I went to visit his site I loved what I found!

Based out of Boston, USA and going under the name of The Gross Uncle, Grant’s done a stack of really great work covering children’s book illiustration, customs and editorial stuff. And you can even get your hands on very reasonably priced hand-drawn original drawings and hand-customised trainers on request!!!

So if you have five spare minutes today then we can’t recommend enough a visit to Grant’s blog to see his drawings, a trip to Hand Painted Customs to see his mod’d trainers and definitely a trip to Theo In The Making, where Grant talks through the process of creating his first book, and shows stacks of ace storyboards, character illos and process pics!
