This October, if you’re anywhere near Beijing then you should make sure you check out the Icograda World Design Congress. There’s gonna be about 100 speakers and will focus around the theme of Xin, which literally means human speaking in Chinese, but in this situation will broaden to cover loads of issues surrounding communication in design. With workshops as well, and speakers including people like Troika and Kiko Farkas (featured above), it should be an inspirational event!

It runs from 24-30th October and more details can be found on the official site.

A very very very interesting exhibition is happening at Times Square, HK, a collection of one of the most iconic and internationally famous rodents around, love by kids and adults alike, the Mickey Brand Halo Exhibition. The combination of the classic Mickey Mouse character with the vinyl toy scene, customised from head to toe by a rumored 50 artists.

There is a range of Mickey’s in different styles, giving the classic character a new lease of life. This is one mouse that you won’t mind inhabiting your homes. Kronenbourg 1664 launched its ‘French Art of Pleasure – Mobile Arts’ campaign at LKF, Hong Kong, last week. Several renowned Hong Kong artists were asked to produce graphics and illustrations to celebrate the event and brand, covering a mass of walls, windows, tables, beer glasses and coasters. Featured above are TC favourite Graphic Airlines, and one of Jonathan Jay Lee’s beautiful, comic style illustrations on a beer glass. Beer and art, what more can you ask for?

Well there’s plenty of vinyl toys, and customs, there’s even a movie made about them, so here’s a nice change, towards customising other items. Klomp! is a cross-cultural design-for-charity event where Hong Kong and China based artists and designers were invited to design a pair of original Dutch wooden shoes (’clogs’ in English, ‘klomp’ in Dutch). The Asian creativeness and flair, expressed on to these symbolic objects of the Dutch, produce something completely unique. There will be a charity auction to give these clogs a good home, which will end 28th May, with the proceeds going to Oxfam, Hong Kong. Our good friends Graphic Airlines (read our interview) were also involved in the project, and their piece looks brilliant as usual.

– An extended report on the Chinese design scene.

There’s so much to be excited about when you look at the Chinese Design Industry today. We are truly on the cusp of a design revolution, with cool kids such as Jellymon, rebellious stalwarts Graphic Airlines, legendary veteran designer Han Meilin and a whole host of other plucky expressive individuals and studios bashing out a plethora of stunning work, it would be rude not to see what’s happening out there.
