inspiration: Picture Book Report

MegHunt-Alice

The Picture Book Report is a brand new illustration project dreamed up by the super talented painter/doodler, Meg Hunt.

“..Picture Book Report is an extended love-song to books. Fifteen illustrators will reach out to their favorite books and create wonderful pieces of art in response to the text that has moved them, shaped them, or excited them. From sci-fi to children’s books to fantasy to serious novels, we’ll cover them all..” – Meg Hunt

So, at the beginning of each month 15 new illustrations will be released, one after the other starting with the covers. The story has started this month with Meg Hunt’s ‘Alice in Wonderland, and Will Bryant’s ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’. It’s quite exciting waiting for the next picture to come out each day, and seeing how each artist depicts their favourite book. With so much to see, and new illustrations from such wonderful artists nearly everyday, it’s a project to be bookmarked right away.

Contributors: Meg Hunt, Will Bryant, Sam Bosma, Julia Sonmi Heglund, John Martz, Andrea Kalfas, Lizzy Stewart, S.britt, Daniel Krall, PMurphy, Israel Sanchez, Jeremy Sorese, Laura Park, Phil McAndrew, Kali Ciesemier

inspiration: McBess | Malevolent Melody

MCBESS-01

One day, in the early month of February at Thunder Chunky HQ, under a mountain of paper and magazines, next to the post-it notes and the Chuck Norris-isms book laid a small black square comic. Not just any comic, it was the McBess ‘Malevolent Melody’ comic.

“..Malevolent Melody – tells the story of a young McBess’s journey through forgotten melodies to find the ultimate source of his character’s amnesia..”

This awesome short story leads up to the unveiling of a Vinyl record at the back of the book. With a pen in one hand, and a guitar in the other, McBess blows our minds with his artwork, followed by the powerful sounds from his band, ‘The Dead Pirates’ (Watch the McBess Music Video).

Released last year Nov/Dec 2009, it’s McBess’s first comic, in collaboration with the freshest and hippest new publishers in town, Nobrow.

Any of you who follow us on Twitter will have seen us discussing this already, but for everyone else, we’ve finally launched our charity project, alongside Ben The Illustrator, which is called The Renmen Project.

inspiration: What shall I wear today?

fifi-main

I would say Fifi Lapin is the ultimate Diva in the world of character illustration. She is a sweet bunny with big silk ears, and doesn’t only have a strong interest in carrots, carrot cakes and carrot juices like ordinary bunnies do; she is also dressed in the most glamorous and elegant outfits, following the latest trends of fashion and updating her wardrobe every few days. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Galiano, Topshop are just some of the distinguished brands and designers Fifi can be seen sporting!

inspiration: Yoink! by Camellie

camellie-yoink-screenprint

I’m currently enjoying all that is Camellie at the moment! The 24yr old romanian illustrator produces intertwining explosions of cute, yet odd, character line drawings with so much style and charisma.

Her latest piece is entitled Yoink! It’s a limited edition of just 15 screenprints on 300gms paper, size 38×38cm, hand pulled by the equally cool Adam Dedman and hand signed and numbered. It’s available for sale on Camellie’s website and soon they’ll be up for sale in the Cut-Out Shop at Custard Factory in Birmingham.

inspiration: So Good For Little Bunnies | by Brandi Milne

brandi-bunnies02

During the weekend, I was scouting around forbidden planet for a nice birthday present for a friend, and came across this book, ‘So Good For Little Bunnies’. I opened it up and my inner child suddenly jumped out and in to this surreal and dream like world, each page bringing a smirk to my face.

Self-taught and emotionally driven, the uber talented Brandi Milne produces such beautifully sweet work, sugar coated, very addictive and makes your eyes drool. She published ‘ So Good For Little Bunnies’ back in the summer of 2008 with Baby Tattoo Books (their website has a lot of these little gems).

It was a great discovery which I really wanted to share, a nice book for your collection. Brandi’s work is also featured in both written and online publications such as Hi Fructose Magazine, Babyboss Magazine and juxtapoz.com.

More of her products can be bought through her online shop.

interview with DON CARSON

Don Carson lead

On TC we’ve been able to feature creatives from many different corners of the industry and Don Carson has a job most of us would love! As a concept designer, Don spent a number of years working as part of the Walt Disney Imagineering team, hatching ideas for theme parks and attractions, whilst being given creative freedom to let his ideas run wild. Don spared us some of his time away from his current job as a 3D environment designer to talk to us about life at WDI, his love of Fountain Pentels and the importance of cake!
