Anyone who is into video games will be fully aware that Little Big Planet has finally landed in the UK. So we thought it was only right that we should do our bit to big up the guy behind the cover artwork: Rexbox! A freelance illustrator and animator, there’s a good chance you may have seen his e4 sting, his Orange ads, his design and animation promo work for Little Big Planet or any of his highly-acclaimed animated shorts…. the guy has skills! And as you can see above, his artwork was even converted into a Little Big Planet popup shop in London. There’s loads of his work on his site and some really interesting behind-the-scenes stuff on his blog. Well worth a bookmark!

With the world’s media focussing on man-of-the-moment Barack Obama, any editorial illustration is likely to become a highly-desired collectors item. But none is more deserving than the incredible cover Bob Staake has just done for the New Yorker (shown above). Bob’s also put together this short little movie featuring the cover, along with Barack Obama audio, which adds to it even more. Bob has a really unique way of working, and if you missed it when it was posted around a while ago, you really should watch this video of him creating a New Yorker cover.
And if all that’s whetted your appetite, why not read our interview with Bob!

We’re now entering the dangerous xmas shopping period, where we’ll all be on the lookout for some gifts for friends and family, and here’s our first suggestion for you! Immedium books are a San Francisco publisher who produce illustrated books, and what’s great about them is that they’re great for youngsters, but also great from an aesthetical point of view. The showcase series they have is Meomi’s Octonauts series, which apparently is slated for UK tv series soon too! Shown above are also The Woollyhoodwinks vs. the Dark Patch and Chaff n’ Skaffs, which is done by TC contributor Skaffs! A lot of the books come autographed from the publisher too. I may well have to place an order…

It’s always nice when you get an unexpected treat in the post… and we were chuffed to get a great little promo pack from new Liverpool-based illustrator duo Mumps! Recently formed by Ceri Jones and Oliver Smith, the duo already have a really neat portfolio of work. If you’re looking for some fresh new talent for a project, then these are your guys! (And of course, the fact they’re from Liverpool is just a bonus)

Cubeecraft is a site dedicated to paper toys. In a nutshell, these are toys you simply download, cut out and fold. The Cubeecraft site has shed-loads you can download from The Rocketeer to Lion-O… but one of their toys escaped this week (Stewie Griffin to be precise) and tried to get himself in as a late submission to the Turner Prize! You can see more pics and download the paper toy from the Cubeelog. It’d get my vote! Thanks Ben for the link!

As Winter draws in it’s always good to get a slice of psychadelic design sunshine from LA, courtesy of 100TIFICO design studio. They’ve done a really interesting selection of music and editorial design and also have a bunch of t-shirts you can buy.

We all know that animation is a labour of love, and Hell Kitchen lived up to the tradition for it’s creators, Raoul Olou and Sigmund Payne, two Paris-based students. They spent 10 months working on the short film, which has a really interesting blend of hand-drawn elements and 3d environments. And you’ve got to love the French illustration style! Oh… and it features a couple of kids who go through some mad portal inside their oven… you know you want to see it now!
You can watch the whole animation on the Hell Kitchen site.
