inspiration: A Beautiful Machine

beautiful-machine01

If you’re into bikes and the beautiful sub-cultures that surround them you’ll like what’s going on down in Bristol. McFaul studios, Howies and ripedigital have got together to celebrate it all in an 2 week event entitled A beautiful Machine. Alongside the is a huge line up of beautifully printed art from likes of ilovedust, Jon Burgerman, Steven Bonner. There are some great talks from ex BMX champion Tim March and James Bowthorphe (round-the-world record holder), as well as many others in the biking world.

Although we weren’t there to witness the launch night last friday ourselves, we hear it went pretty well and there has been a special ladies themed night already.

The actual art exhibition finishes Friday 9th April, but please make of a note of the special evening talks on the Beautiful Machine Calendar which shouldn’t be missed.

inspiration: Boxbird | A to B Exhibition

Main

After the roaring success of last years film inspired, Cinemascope Exhibition, and gaining the Brighton, Fringe Festival 2009 ‘Best in Show Winners’ award, Boxbird are back and aiming for that grand prize again. This time round they have opted for the handmade approach, asking all artists involved to produce something using contemporary printmaking skills & Illustration. The theme this year is equally exciting, inspired by travel, and weird and wonderful adventures, and just the few previews above show the diversity in styles and imagination for the amazing journey that will be the A to B Exhibition.

“…Join Boxbird and over 30 artists from across the globe for one of the Brighton Fringe Festival’s most eagerly anticipated exhibitions with new and exclusive work by some incredible talent including Jon Burgerman, Graham Carter, Lidia de Pedro, Peepshow Illustration Collective and Modern Toss…” – Boxbord Gallery

Unfortunately, we don’t have anymore information on other artists’ submissions, we do however have details about ‘Chasing Constellations, Screenprint, Stephen Chan’ that I would love to share with everyone (sorry for the shameless plug again).

report: Help Haiti

Help-Haiti

During this short period of time since the tragedy happened, many projects and donations have already started up from the design world. We the Designers, Illustrators, Creatives, Artists, do what we do best; we offer up our skills, and do whatever we can for the people involved in the Haiti earthquake.

Tomorrow we here at Thunder Chunky are going to be launching our own project to help raise some money for the cause, but in the mean time we’ve rounded up a few projects which are currently running, raising money to Help Haiti. We hope that you can show your support by visiting these sites, and spend some money if you haven’t donated already.

inspiration: The paper art of Shin Tanaka

shin-tanaka

Japanese street artist Shin Tanaka is a paper folding genius, who’s best known for his elaborate paper sneakers. He started folding said sneakers in his student days to comfort his inability to buy the real thing. Apparently he’s been folding paper since he was 4 years old and has managed to fuse origami and urban culture, crafting each new toy with precision through trial and error much like an engineer.

He relishes getting other people involved and that’s why he has a range of templates on his site for his various paper toys encouraging people to create and share! Through his worldwide exhibitions and global success he’s been able to collaborate with some of the biggest names of the creative world like Jon Burgerman, David Horvath and Skwak for his “Hoophy” toy which you can download for free.

You should all go over to the Shin Tanaka site today and marvel at just exactly what can be done with a few pieces of paper. Go create!
