inspiration: Picture Book Report

MegHunt-Alice

The Picture Book Report is a brand new illustration project dreamed up by the super talented painter/doodler, Meg Hunt.

“..Picture Book Report is an extended love-song to books. Fifteen illustrators will reach out to their favorite books and create wonderful pieces of art in response to the text that has moved them, shaped them, or excited them. From sci-fi to children’s books to fantasy to serious novels, we’ll cover them all..” – Meg Hunt

So, at the beginning of each month 15 new illustrations will be released, one after the other starting with the covers. The story has started this month with Meg Hunt’s ‘Alice in Wonderland, and Will Bryant’s ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’. It’s quite exciting waiting for the next picture to come out each day, and seeing how each artist depicts their favourite book. With so much to see, and new illustrations from such wonderful artists nearly everyday, it’s a project to be bookmarked right away.

Contributors: Meg Hunt, Will Bryant, Sam Bosma, Julia Sonmi Heglund, John Martz, Andrea Kalfas, Lizzy Stewart, S.britt, Daniel Krall, PMurphy, Israel Sanchez, Jeremy Sorese, Laura Park, Phil McAndrew, Kali Ciesemier

inspiration: Andy Smith Blue Inks Competition

andy-smith-blue-inks-1

Andy Smith is back with some of his indelible typography, this time in the form of a silkscreened book called ‘Blue Inks’. As you may have guessed, the book is printed entirely in shades of blue, and tells the story of the day-to-day life of a colour, including the daily struggle with long-standing enemies such as the yellows and the magentas! The books are hand-printed by Andy himself and we’re lucky enough to have to book+poster sets to give away!! Here’s what you have to do…

inspiration: The World of C86 from Matt Lyon

c86-artwork

UK-based illustrator Matt Lyon (aka C86) isn’t afraid to use colour! Browsing through his portfolio is bound to brighten even the dullest, rainy autumn day, and to make it even better he’s just updated his C86 site, with a bunch of new work as well as downloadable freebies (in the shopping section). We’ve picked out a couple of his final pieces, but there’s drawings on his site as well, featuring a stack of his ace geometric patterns.

inspiration: Mike Perry’s Insound Classic 10

insound-classic-10

It’s always a pleasure to see new work from Mike Perry, as we’re massive fans of his colourful hand-drawn typography and illustration, so we’re definitely liking his latest project! Done for online Indie store Insound, it’s called Insound Classic 10 and involved Mike taking ten iconic post-punk and indie rock bands from 1977-1997 and putting together some fresh merchandise for them. Each of the designs (four of which are above) are being printed as limited edition tees, tote bags and silk-screened posters. And, the results are flippin’ awesome! They’re released in September and you can pre-order them from the Insound store now.

And if you’re a fan, then be sure to check out the interview we did with Mike.

inspiration: Top Gear Typography by Toyota

Here’s a strange one, what do you get when you mix a Toyota IQ, a warehouse in belgium and some over zealous typographers? The creation of the new IQ font.

Two typographers ( Pierre & Damien ) and a pro race pilot (Stef van Campenhoudt) collaborated to design a font with a car. The car movements were tracked using a custom software, designed by interactive artist Zachary Lieberman.

The final results are ambitious yet neat, and you can download the full IQ font set here.

You can also view more photos of the IQ font experiment here.

inspiration: Jay Taylor scribbles

Jay Taylor

Really nice hand-drawn illustrations from UK-based illustrator Jay Taylor. A lot of his work has a social statement and encourages you to have a bit of a stop and think about the state of the world. There’s a selection of his illustrations and typography on his site, and there’s a shop on there as well if you’d like to grab yourself a print.
