inspiration: DRINK AND DRAW

drink and draw

If you’ve ever attempted a doodle after a few pints then you’ll know that fun can be had. Draw the Line at the Basement Bar, Django’s Riff in Liverpool is a monthly event that allows illustrators and artists to chill out and enjoy the art of doodling… as you can tell from the pics!

Report: Designed by China

– An extended report on the Chinese design scene.

Chinese inspiration

There’s so much to be excited about when you look at the Chinese Design Industry today. We are truly on the cusp of a design revolution, with cool kids such as Jellymon, rebellious stalwarts Graphic Airlines, legendary veteran designer Han Meilin and a whole host of other plucky expressive individuals and studios bashing out a plethora of stunning work, it would be rude not to see what’s happening out there. So we picked out a selection of our favourite designers to update you on.

interview with BUCK

Buck C-Tree

In a world bombarded with visual ephemera across ever expanding mediums, grabbing your attention and delivering a message is no easy task. L.A. / NY based Buck do this every day, as routine. They meticulously plan, construct and output graphic commercials to make our lives a much prettier place. We caught up with Ryan Honey, Buck’s Creative Director, who talked us through why a spoonful of Buck a day helps keep their clients smiling…

inspiration: FRENCH EYE-CANDY

Skwak, Superdeux and Geneveive Gaukler

As part of the TC summer hols, I’ve just got back from a few days in sunny France, so I thought I’d post up some recent work from a few of my favourite French designers and illustrators. Skwak has just done some insanely vivid summer campaign work for KOFOLA fashion. SUPERDEUX have put together a funky sun-tinged nostalgic music video for the band KEEDZ for their song “Stand on the Word”. You can watch it directly on their homepage or via Dailymotion. Genevieve Gauckler designed a new toy for Medicom Toys called Pierre. You can’t beat a good ol’ mental plush toy! And if you’re interested in spending some Euros on a trip to Paris then you really need to check out Colette and Artoyz!

And if you can’t make it to Paris, then why not treat yourself to French-themed Dunny from Kidrobot. Any other French inspiration? Leave your comments with suggestions!

Scott Jackson characters

Scott Jackson characters

He’s not French, but we enjoyed checking out Scott Jackson’s work. He was recently interviewed over at Designfeedr and his character work is well worth checking out!

Finally, it’s the closing week of the AOI Images 2009 competition. It’s the UK’s only jury-selected illustration competition (apparently) and you could get some really good exposure from it, so if you’ve done a piece of work this year you’re proud of, then head on over and submit!

inspiration: PAPER AND INK

Jon Burgerman and World Lovin prints

This week we’ve been inspired by a number of screenprints, ready to brighten the walls of anyone’s studio, sunhouse or shed.

Jon Burgerman took part in a show called Blisters On My Fingers (Beatles reference?), for which he produced this 2-colour print. You can still grab one of the 20 or so copies left from Print Club.

Ben The Illustrator also dropped us a line to let us know about his World Lovin’ Posters. All you eco-friendly designers out there will love these as they’re printed on FSC certified paper and only use vegetable inks. Each print is limited to a run of 100 as well.

And if you’re still looking for more screen-print inspiration then check out Boxbird, who launched last month. They have a great variety of silkscreen and Giclée prints and asked Stephen to put something together for them, which you can see here.

Kev Speck dropped us a line telling us about a project he’s working on to keep his creative juices flowing - Blind Drawings… The Boy Fitz Hammond has a new tee up on Threadless called Small Mammal Flying Machine… and we were introduced to a new illustration treat, Crayonlegs (check out their Literal Facial Hair illustrations… Goatee anyone?).
