At the beginning of this year, iLovedust dreamt up the idea of producing a book of graphic design, illustration and photography to raise money to help charities deal with the tsunami crisis in Asia. Immediately after they started, iLoveDust began receiving an exciting amount of positive feedback from designers and prospective partners who wanted to support the project. Today, this book idea has become a reality. We caught up with Mark from I Love Dust who explained it all to us…
Welcome back to TC. Congratulations on being able to put together such an impressive book in such a short amount of time. Tell us a bit about how the project came about and the reaction there has been to it.
Hello to you to! Well, the book Designed To Help really started at the beginning of this year. For us at iLovedust we were shocked by the disaster in Asia and talked about what we could do to try and make a difference. We just knocked some ideas about and dreamt up the idea of producing a book of graphic design, illustration and photography to raise money to help charities deal with the tsunami crisis in Asia.
Immediately after we started communicating the project to people we knew like Tado, Black Convoy , Yacht Associates, we started receiving an exciting amount of positive feedback from designers and prospective partners who wanted to support the project.
It happened very, very quickly and before we knew it we were meeting DGV in Berlin and talking about the size and capacity of the final book! Those guys are great and have really handled the project with the upmost care. Special thanks to them for making it all happen!

What words of encouragement would you give to those people out there who are unsure whether to purchase the book?
I don’t think people will need too much encouragement to buy the book! Its filled to the brim with some of the best design in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD!
But seriously, I think that the Designed To Help book really is a must have for so many people: designers and the like who can just sit down and flick through all the different styles and ideas that are on each and every page. We’re not really into the hard sell, the book sells itself.
Renowned design publisher Die Gestalten Verlag (dgv) will publish “A Book Designed To Help” at the beginning of March 2005 and will distribute it through its global network of sales representatives and booksellers. It is a lavish, though at a price of 27.99 GBP affordable, hardcover of 304 pages featuring around 1,000 artworks from over 240 contributors from around the world.
All profits from the sale of “A Book Designed To Help” will go to respected worldwide charity organization CARE, who will use the funds to help the poorest communities recover from the tsunami disaster. To provide utmost transparency, a detailed account of all donations resulting from this project will be regularly updated at www.designedtohelp.com.
